Fritzlar est une ville allemande du Land de Hesse d'environ 15 000 habitants au riche passé. Elle se situe au bord de la rivière Eder. Chef-lieu d'évêché et ville d'empire, elle joua un rôle important dans le Saint-Empire au haut Moyen Âge, aussi bien sur le plan religieux avec l'abattage du chêne de Thor par Boniface de Mayence en 723, qu'avec l'élection d’Henri Ier lors de la diète de 919.
