Le nom vient de l'ancien monastère de Klarenthal, situé à proximité, dont quelques bâtiments sont encore préservés.
La colonie, dans le style d'une ville "satellite" ou "de banlieue", a été construite au début des années 1960 sur les pentes du Taunus et avec vue sur le centre-ville de Wiesbaden, sur un terrain vierge, selon le plan d'Ernst May, par la Nassauische Heimstätte. Elle se compose principalement de grands immeubles collectifs et de tours d'habitation, entourés de verdure. On y trouve aussi de nombreuses maisons en rangée. La première pierre a été posée le 11 septembre 1964, et les premiers appartements ont été occupés en février 1966. Aujourd'hui, environ 10 400 habitants y vivent.
