Le quartier a été officiellement désigné comme Leithe avant son incorporation à Wattenscheid le 1er avril 1926 et est souvent appelé dans les documents comme Westfälisch Leithe. Une partie de la commune dissoute a été transférée à Gelsenkirchen. Avec l'incorporation de Wattenscheid, Leithe est devenu partie de Bochum le 1er janvier 1975. Le Leithe rhénan se trouve de l'autre côté du ruisseau de Leithe.
