Les écluses de Datteln font partie - en venant du Rhin - du dernier des six niveaux de canal du canal Wesel-Datteln au kilomètre de canal 59,28 à Datteln-Natrop. Un kilomètre en amont, le canal Wesel-Datteln se jette dans le canal Dortmund-Ems au croisement de Datteln.
La grande écluse de Datteln a été construite en 1928 et inaugurée en 1931 avec le canal. La chambre de l'écluse a une longueur de 222 m, une largeur de 12 m, la hauteur de chute est de 7,5 m et la consommation d'eau par éclusage est de 20 000 m³. Des navires ayant un tirant d'eau allant jusqu'à 2,8 m peuvent être éclusés. Cette écluse est fermée par des portes à levage du côté amont et du côté aval. Ces portes d'écluse ont été renouvelées en novembre 1993.
