La centrale électrique Gustav Knepper était une centrale au charbon située dans le quartier de Mengede à Dortmund, à la frontière de la ville de Castrop-Rauxel. Elle a été nommée d'après le directeur de la mine Gustav Knepper. Les anciens blocs A/B étaient situés sur le territoire de Dortmund, tandis que le bloc C se trouvait sur le territoire de Castrop-Rauxel.
La centrale au charbon a été construite de 1951 à 1971 selon les plans de l'architecte industriel d'Essen Fritz Schupp sur le site de l'installation de puits Gustav de la mine Adolf von Hansemann en cinq phases d'extension. L'exploitant de la centrale était à l'origine la Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks-AG, suivie par la Bochumer Bergbau AG et la VEBA Kraftwerke Ruhr AG. De la fusion de VEBA et Viag est née la E.ON AG, qui a ensuite scindé ses centrales conventionnelles au sein du groupe Uniper. Enfin, la centrale appartenait au groupe Hagedorn. Cependant, l'acquisition de la centrale n'a eu lieu qu'après sa mise à l'arrêt.
