La grotte de Hohlenstein-Stadel était l'endroit où les premiers exemples indiscutables d'art, et probablement de religion, ont été trouvés. Ici, ils ont trouvé la figurine en ivoire d'un 'homme-lion'. Le corps est humain, mais la tête est léonine. Un symbole également utilisé par le constructeur automobile Peugeot. C'était la première preuve que l'esprit humain pouvait imaginer des choses qui n'existent pas vraiment. La figurine à tête de lion est la plus ancienne sculpture zoomorphe (en forme d'animal) connue au monde, et le plus ancien exemple incontesté d'art figuratif. Il a été déterminé qu'elle avait entre 35 000 et 40 000 ans grâce à la datation au carbone de matériaux provenant de la couche dans laquelle elle a été trouvée.
