La synagogue d'Emden, inaugurée en 1836 et agrandie en 1910, a été détruite en 1938 lors de la nuit de Cristal comme la plupart des autres lieux de culte juif en Allemagne.
Emden est une ville portuaire allemande du Land de Basse-Saxe, sur le fleuve Ems, principale ville de la région de la Frise orientale, près de la frontière avec les Pays-Bas. Elle compte actuellement environ 52 000 habitants.
