Finsterau est un village situé à environ 1000 mètres au-dessus du niveau de la mer dans la commune de Mauth dans le district de Freyung-Grafenau dans la forêt bavaroise à la frontière avec la République tchèque. L’arrondissement de Finsterau comprend les villages de Finsterau et Heinrichsbrunn.
Le village a été fondé en 1704 en tant que dernier village et le plus septentrional de « Großphilippsreut » sur la branche Bergreichenstein du Sentier d’Or par le prince-évêque Johann Philipp von Lamberg avec dix domaines. Le nom d’origine de l’endroit était « Halbwald » car le village était situé à mi-chemin entre Kreuzberg et Bergreichenstein. Le nom de Finsterau apparaît pour la première fois au milieu du 18ème siècle.
