Le village se trouve à environ cinq kilomètres au sud de Betzenstein et est situé à une altitude de 529 m au-dessus du niveau de la mer.
La désignation originale de Riegelstein était Raupersdorf. Hans I. le Türrigel a initié la construction du château de Riegelstein. Ses fils se sont appelés pour la première fois en 1403 « Tyrrigel zum Riegelstein », également Türriegel ou Dürriegel. C'est ainsi que le village a reçu le nom : « Riegelstein ». Les Türriegel étaient des ministériels des Schenken von Reicheneck et se sont séparés des Schenken avec une vaste propriété autour de Riegelstein. À partir de 1403, ils étaient allodiaux. Vers l'an 1500, Heinrich VI. n'était pas seulement chevalier de tournoi à Ingolstadt, Bamberg et Würzburg, mais il était également gardien à plein temps des châteaux de Stierberg et de Betzenstein.
