Péronne fut fortement détruite durant la Première Guerre mondiale. Elle fut le point de départ de la conquête de la France lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le 20 mai 1940, à 7 heures du matin, deux divisions blindées commandées par le général Heinz Guderian quittèrent Péronne, cap à l'ouest, pour entamer la conquête de la France. Elles devaient atteindre la côte le soir même.
