Kembs ancien village gallo-romain (appelé autrefois Cambete) s'est développé sur l'axe d'une voie romaine qui reliait Strasbourg à Augst en Suisse. Plus tard Kembs devint un relais important des postes Royales (le fer à cheval sur son blason évoque cette période). C'est à Kembs que fut construite, entre 1928 et 1932, la première des dix centrales hydroélectriques érigées sur la partie franco-allemande du Rhin en même temps qu'était aménagé le premier bief du grand canal d'Alsace sous la direction de l’ingénieur Koechlin. Inaugurée le 9 octobre 1932 par le Président de la république Albert Lebrun, la centrale fut détruite pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle a été reconstruite et remise en marche en 1945.
