Sondernach, avec 663 habitants, tire son nom du ruisseau sud de la vallée. Fondé au XIIe siècle par les bénédictins de l’abbaye Saint-Grégoire, il obtient son indépendance après 1789. Détruit lors de la bataille de Metzeral en 1915, le village abrite aujourd'hui des églises commémoratives et propose des activités touristiques variées.
