Lors de l'insurrection de la Commune de 1871, la colonne a été abattue à l'initiative du peintre Gustave Courbet dans le but de réutiliser le bronze pour des canons, mais après la répression de l'insurrection, la colonne a été rétablie sur ordre du maréchal Mac-Mahon, président de la République française. Les frais de rétablissement ont été réclamés à Courbet, qui devait payer chaque année 10 000 francs, soit environ 43 000 euros. Cependant, il est mort en exil avant que le premier versement puisse être effectué.
