Déjà au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, les troupes allemandes ont conquis la France à la vitesse de l’éclair. Les Britanniques quittent alors la France en masse pour se regrouper en Grande-Bretagne.
Cet exode massif a été appelé opération Dynamo. Plus de 300 000 soldats ont pu s’échapper de Dunkerque avec plus de 1000 navires.
Le HMS Crested Eagle était l’un des nombreux navires les moins fortunés: le navire a été bombardé par un avion allemand (un Stuka) et échoué à cet endroit. Plus de 300 soldats sont morts dans les flammes.
