L'école Merchiston Castle est un internat indépendant pour garçons et les filles âgés de 7 à 18 ans. Elle est fondée en 1833 sur le modèle des public schools anglaises.
En 1828, Charles Chalmers, frère du théologien Thomas Chalmers, ouvre une petite école à Park Place, sur un site aujourd'hui occupé par le McEwan Hall. En mai 1833, il prend à bail le château de Merchiston — qui se trouvait à l'époque dans un environnement rural — et y installe l'école. C'est de là que vient le nom de l'école. Au fil du temps, le nombre d'élèves a augmenté et le château de Merchiston est devenu trop petit pour accueillir l'école. Les gouverneurs décident alors d'acheter 90 acres de terrain sur le domaine de Colinton House, à quatre miles au sud-ouest d'Édimbourg. La construction commence en 1928 et comprend les internats Chalmers et Rogerson, conçus par Robert Lorimer . L'école emménage à ColintonColinton en 1930.
