Le Vardar ou Axiós est le plus long fleuve de la Macédoine géographique. Avec ses 380 km, il traverse la Macédoine du Nord et le nord de la Grèce. La partie grecque du fleuve est longue de 76 km.
Le nom grec du fleuve, Axiós, est probablement une adaptation thrace de la racine iranienne *a-xšei, qui veut dire « noir » ou « sombre ». Le nom slave, Vardar, est quant à lui attesté depuis le Xe siècle et viendrait de Bardários, de l'indo-européen *wordo-wori « sombre ». Une légende rapportée par François Pouqueville fait remonter le nom Vardar à un peuple d'origine iranienne, les Bardariotes, qui aurait été établi sur ses rives au IXe siècle.
