L'hôpital, qui a été conçu par William Deane Butler dans le style élisabéthain, a ouvert en tant que Sligo Asylum en 1855. Il est devenu Sligo Mental Hospital dans les années 1920 et a ensuite été renommé hôpital St. Columba dans les années 1950. Après l'introduction de la désinstitutionalisation à la fin des années 1980, l'hôpital a connu une période de déclin et a fermé en 1992. Après avoir été converti pour un usage hôtelier, il a rouvert en tant que Clarion Hotel en 2005 et a ensuite été re-nommé Clayton Hotel. En 2021, 167 chambres sont disponibles à l'utilisation.
