Dans la baie de La Spezia, le poète Percy Shelley, époux de Mary Shelley, se noie en 1822. Son voilier coule lors d'une tempête. Il a navigué de Livourne pour retourner à Lerici. Son corps a été échoué sur le rivage près de Viareggio.
Mary Shelly est surtout connue pour son roman Frankenstein. Percy Shelley était également un poète anglais bien connu. Ils étaient de bons amis de Lord Byron et du médecin James Lind, qui menait des expériences avec l'électricité sur des grenouilles. Il n'est pas improbable qu'il ait inspiré le roman Frankenstein.
