Le Piacenzien est une période du Pliocène. Le Piacenzien a été introduit dans la littérature scientifique en 1858 par le stratigraphe suisse Karl Mayer-Eymar. Il est nommé d'après cette ville italienne de Piacenza. C'est une période de réchauffement (la phase piacenzienne du Pliocène - il y a environ 3 millions d'années), lorsque les températures ont augmenté de plus de 3 °C, le niveau de la mer était 20 mètres plus haut qu'aujourd'hui, et il y avait plus de dioxyde de carbone dans l'atmosphère que jamais auparavant.
