Poséidonia était une colonie grecque fondée en 600 av. J.-C. sur la côte tyrrhénienne, au sud de Salerne. Après la soumission de l'Italie du sud par Rome, marquée par la prise de Tarente, la cité devient une colonie romaine, déduite et rebaptisée à l'occasion Paestum en 273-272 av. J.-C., nom le plus couramment utilisé pour désigner le site de nos jours. Elle se trouve sur le territoire de la commune actuelle de Capaccio-Paestum, en Campanie.
