L'aéroport est également connu sous le nom d'Aéroport de Cortina d'Ampezzo et d'Aéroport de Fiames car il est situé dans la frazione de Fiames.
L'aéroport a été construit pour les Jeux Olympiques d'hiver de 1956. Il est resté fermé au trafic depuis un accident impliquant un Cessna 206 le 31 mai 1976. Le pilote et les cinq passagers ont été tués dans un crash immédiatement après le décollage dans des conditions de vent difficiles.
