La Piazza Castelnuovo et la Piazza Ruggero Settimo adjacente forment un seul espace urbain, communément appelé Piazza Politeama, grâce à la présence du Teatro Politeama , le deuxième théâtre le plus important de la ville après le Teatro Massimo.
La place représente l'une des places les plus populaires de la ville.
Sur la Piazza Castelnuovo se trouvent une structure appelée « Palchetto della Musica » (œuvre de Salvatore Valenti), le monument à Carlo Cottone (œuvre de Giovan Battista Palazzotto et Domenico Costantino), les sculptures « Nautica » (œuvre de Mario Rutelli), « Lavoro " (œuvre de Benedetto Civiletti) et "Senzatetto" (œuvre de Pasquale Civiletti).
La place porte le nom de Carlo Cottone, prince de Castelnuovo, l'un des partisans de la Constitution sicilienne de 1812.
