L'île néerlandaise de Texel a été choisie par National Geographic comme la 12ème plus belle île du monde parmi une liste de 111. La première de la liste était les îles Féroé.
Texel a également été choisie comme lieu de résidence par Jan Wolkers, qui est décédé le 19 octobre 2007 à l'âge de 81 ans. Il y a emménagé en 1981 dans le hameau de Westermient.
