Le 1er janvier 1997, la commune de Steenbergen a été créée, à la suite de la fusion des communes de Dinteloord et Prinsenland, Nieuw-Vossemeer et Steenbergen. Avec les villages ecclésiastiques déjà rattachés à Steenbergen, Kruisland et De Heen, la nouvelle commune comprend donc 5 noyaux. Chacun avec son propre caractère.
La commune compte un peu plus de 23 000 habitants et une superficie d'environ 16 000 ha. Une commune à l'origine agricole avec, dans les noyaux de Steenbergen et Dinteloord, un caractère industriel et commercial.
