Probablement, le village doit son nom à la famille Osse, qui gérait une écluse (Zijl). Aujourd'hui, l'écluse n'est plus en service. Surtout en été, Ossenzijl attire de nombreux touristes qui passent une journée aux Weerribben. Ossenzijl se situe en partie dans la réserve naturelle des Weerribben, qui a déjà été choisie comme le plus bel endroit des Pays-Bas.
