Auprès de ce cimetière se trouvait vers 1300 une église avec des fermes. Le cimetière était, en plus du cimetière de Naarden, à l'origine le seul cimetière du Gooi. Après la Réforme, l'église catholique devait disparaître. Le cimetière est resté un lieu de pèlerinage. Encore aujourd'hui, le premier dimanche après la fête de la Saint-Jean, le 24 juin, la procession de la Saint-Jean part de la basilique Saint-Jean à Laren vers ce cimetière.
