Lamoraal conte di Egmont è probabilmente la figura più importante della storia di Zottegem. Era signore di Zottegem ed era uno dei più grandi proprietari terrieri feudali ai tempi dell'imperatore Carlo. Su incarico del duca d'Alba, il conte fu decapitato nel 1568 per le sue preoccupazioni riguardo la libertà di religione. Nella piazza puoi trovare la sua statua. È notevole che a soli 500 m ci sia una statua identica. Un po' più avanti si trova il castello di Egmont.
Sotto la chiesa dell'Assunzione di Maria nella piazza si trova la cripta di Egmont, dove sono conservati i resti mortali suoi e di sua moglie Sabina di Baviera.
