Il Hageland presenta molte colline. C'è una spiegazione geologica per questo, poiché qui ci sono colline testimoni fortemente intagliate della Diestiaanzee, chiamata così dalla città di Diest. Questa Diestiaanzee sommerso soprattutto il nord del Belgio durante il periodo del Terziario (70 a 3 milioni di anni fa). La sabbia, a causa della sua composizione, si è indurita molto fino a formare dure banchi di sabbia. Con l'emergere regolare di questi banchi di sabbia, il glauconite si è eroso e la sabbia si è aggregata, dando origine così a uno strato spesso di arenaria ferruginosa.
