Il palo di ferro fu eretto dall'esercito belga nel 1851. Questo palo era un punto di riferimento per misurazioni esatte di distanza e altezza. Il palo è un segnale geodetico che fa parte di una rete geodetica triangolare. Le altre due basi geodetiche si trovavano a Ostenda e Hampiré.
Quando quest'area era ancora una vasta brughiera, le ampie vedute consentivano di effettuare misurazioni precise verso torri di chiese e altri segnali nei dintorni.
