Dopo che Bernadette Soubirous vide apparire Maria in una grotta a Lourdes nel 1858, tali grotte mariane divennero molto popolari. La grotta di Lourdes, con una zona per le candele in basso e una nicchia con la statua della Madonna in alto, è stata riprodotta in miniatura numerose volte in Fiandre. Questa fu costruita nel 1874 ed è oggi un popolare luogo di sosta per escursionisti e ciclisti.
