Il frassino di monte (Ulmus laevis) è un albero della famiglia delle ulmacee, noto anche come olmo. La foglia è ovale fino a ellittica, con nervature a penna e bordo fogliare doppiamente seghettato. Il lato inferiore della foglia è peloso. La corteccia grigio-bruna si sfalda nei giovani alberi. Lo riconosci tra gli altri olmi perché i suoi fiori (e successivamente i frutti) sono su lunghi peduncoli. Da qui il suo nome di frassino volante o di frassino a stelo.
Gli olmi sono sensibili alla malattia dell'olmo, causata da un fungo che viene diffuso dal punteruolo dell'olmo. Ma poiché questi coleotteri non gradiscono particolarmente il frassino di monte, l'albero di solito riesce a sfuggire a questa malattia.
