La regione Fagne-Famenne non è altro che la depressione più meridionale (in alcuni punti fino a 20 km di larghezza) del Condroz. Ciò che colpisce nel rilievo è che questa regione è notevolmente più bassa rispetto alle altre depressioni del Condroz. Questo perché il sottosuolo della Fagne-Famenne è composto da scisti del Carbonifero (argilla indurita che può assorbire molta acqua). Gli scisti mostrano poca resistenza al gelo. Durante le epoche glaciali, qui da noi gelava durante i lunghi mesi invernali. L'acqua presente negli scisti si trasformò in ghiaccio. L'acqua che si ghiaccia si espande e possiede una forza enorme. Di conseguenza, la roccia viene frantumata in pezzi più piccoli (erosione da gelo). Durante le estati più brevi, i enormi fiumi (che trasportavano grandi quantità di acqua di scioglimento) portavano via quegli scisti dalla regione.
