Se vuoi avere una buona idea di come apparisse un canale nel XIX secolo, devi assolutamente andare a vedere il protetto Ponte di San Pietro. Si trova in un ambiente molto idilliaco, su un vecchio ramo del Canale Bossuit-Kortrijk.
Il Canale Bossuit-Kortrijk collega il fiume Schelda con il fiume Leie ed è datato 1861. Mellododici lavoratori impiegano tre anni per scavare il letto lungo 15,4 chilometri, ovviamente interamente a mano. Vengono costruiti anche 18 ponti, il Ponte di San Pietro è uno di questi.
La prima cosa che colpisce quando visiti il sito è quanto sia stretto il letto rispetto ai nostri standard: il ponte si trova su un vecchio ramo del canale, quindi le dimensioni sono storicamente corrette. Il canale era originariamente destinato a navi fino a 300 tonnellate. A titolo di confronto: oggi è navigabile per navi fino a 1.350 tonnellate.
Il Ponte di San Pietro è relativamente raro: non ci sono molti esemplari di ponti levatoi in ferro del XIX secolo rimasti.
Viene azionato manualmente, il che è molto più facile di quanto sembri: il custode del ponte gira una ruota per sollevarlo, ma grazie ai contrappesi e alla trasmissione a ingranaggi non deve esercitare molta forza.
Il ponte ha svolto servizio per più di cento anni: durante l'allargamento negli anni '80 si trova a trovarsi su questo vecchio ramo del canale.
