Già nel XVI secolo la cappella fu nominata per nome. I pellegrini venivano da lontano e vicino a pregare per campi fertili.
Il costruito attuale fu eretto nel 1780 e nel 1899 la cappella fu restaurata.
Essa fece da sfondo alla prima battaglia di Neerwinden (1693) tra le truppe francesi di Luigi XIV e quelle di Orlando Nassau, che guidarono la Lega di Augusta, un'alleanza mostruosa con soldati della Repubblica Olandese, Inghilterra, Spagna, Svezia, Baviera, Hannover e Sassonia.
Nel 1793 sulla stessa pianura si combatté la seconda battaglia di Neerwinden tra l'esercito rivoluzionario francese e un'alleanza militare di degli Asburgo austriaci e dei Fiamminghi meridionali.
