Le Bergenmeersen sono un'area allagata con vegetazione tipica di praterie, boschetti di salici, fanghi e scanni. Tra canne, giunco e grandi coda di gatto trovano rifugio e casa anatre di mare, anatre berge, papere dal petto blu, piccole canne e trampolieri.
Proseguendo sul sentiero di servizio della diga di Bergenmeersen, attraversiamo la chiusa innovativa dove l'acqua del fiume Schelda entra ed esce dall'area due volte al giorno senza disturbare i pesci. In questo modo si promuove un'area naturale di marea, un primato mondiale dal 2013!
Un po' più avanti scendiamo dalla diga sul sentiero sopraelevato. Un'esperienza unica! In questa area, durante i lavori di sistemazione dell'area, è stata rinvenuta una fortificazione in terra medievale, una motta castrale. La sua esistenza conferma l'importanza strategica di Wichelen sul fiume Schelda.
