Nascosto nel bosco di Ommerscheider si trova un semplice monumento realizzato dagli abitanti del villaggio di Meyerode, in commemorazione di Eric Fisher Wood, tenente della 106a divisione di fanteria americana.
È l'unico membro della sua unità a rifiutarsi di arrendersi dopo uno scambio di colpi all'esterno di Schönberg il 17 dicembre 1944 e si è rifugiato nei boschi. A un abitante di Meyerode che gli offre cibo e riparo, dice che se non riesce a raggiungere le linee americane, combatterà da solo nei boschi contro i tedeschi. Nelle settimane seguenti, diverse pattuglie tedesche nella foresta vicino a Meyerode sono state attaccate, causando morti e feriti.
Il cadavere di Eric Fisher Wood è stato trovato all'inizio di febbraio 1945, circondato da sette tedeschi caduti in combattimento.
