L'Atomium è stato costruito per l'Esposizione mondiale di Bruxelles nel 1958, la cosiddetta Expo '58, come simbolo del metallo acciaio. Le nove sfere rappresentano la struttura cristallina del ferro, ingrandita 165 miliardi di volte. L'edificio è stato progettato dall'architetto André Waterkeyn. La sfera superiore dell'Atomium è stata chiamata così in onore del suo progettista André Waterkeyn dopo la sua morte nel 2005.
