L'ex comune di Tenna si estendeva per 11,27 km²; il territorio era per il 45,1% utilizzato per scopi agricoli, il 34% era coperto da foreste, l'1,1% era coperto da edifici mentre il restante 19,8% era improduttivo . Nel territorio comunale si trova la diga di Egschi.
Tenna è citato per la prima volta nei documenti storici nel 1398, con il nome di Thena. Fino al 31 dicembre 2012 è stato un comune autonomo; il 1º gennaio 2013 è stato aggregato agli altri comuni soppressi di Safien, Valendas e Versam per formare il nuovo comune di Safiental.
