Il comune di Nordkirchen si trova circa nel centro del triangolo delle città Dortmund, Münster e Hamm. I comuni limitrofi sono, partendo da ovest e in senso orario, Lüdinghausen, Senden e Ascheberg nel circondario di Coesfeld, nonché Werne e Selm dal circondario di Unna.
La prima menzione documentata di Nordkirchen proviene da un atto del vescovado di Münster ed è datata tra il 1022 e il 1032. A quel tempo, Sigfrido di Walbeck era il vescovo di Münster. Dopo la battaglia di Ermen nel 1242, il castello di Meinhövel fu distrutto. A partire dal XIII secolo, la famiglia von Morrien affittò la corte di Nordkirchen e la gestì fino al XVI secolo. Nel 1561, Nordkirchen fu definitivamente trasferita ai von Morrien mediante l'acquisto del diritto di eredità.
