Dornum è un comune in Ostfriesland e appartiene al distretto di Aurich nello Stato della Bassa Sassonia. Prende il nome dall'omonimo capoluogo. Con 4457 abitanti, è il comune unificato più piccolo nella terraferma del distretto di Aurich.
La frazione di Nesse è una delle più antiche colonie vichinghe in Ostfriesland e risale al IX secolo. Così come a Emden, Groothusen e Grimersum, qui si svolgeva presto il commercio marittimo. Tuttavia, Nesse ha perso, proprio come Groothusen e Grimersum, questa importanza a causa dell'interramento del porto e delle deviazioni dei corsi d'acqua. Dornum è stata una signoria dalla fine del Medioevo fino all'epoca moderna, infine sotto i baroni di Closter.
