Le chiese è un comune nello stato tedesco della Renania Settentrionale-Vestfalia. Il 31 dicembre 2020 il comune contava 12.638 abitanti su una superficie di 58,01 km².
Aldekerk, Niedereyll, Nieukerk, Obereyll e Stenden erano cinque località della regione dell'Overkwartier di Gheldria e quindi appartenevano ai Paesi Bassi Meridionali. L'area di Oudekerk e Nieuwekerk, come erano chiamate in olandese, era conosciuta come la Reggenza di Gheldria. Questo si riferisce a Geldern, situato nelle vicinanze, e non alla provincia attuale.
Nel 1701, durante la guerra di successione spagnola, la capitale della Gheldria, Gelderen, e l'area circostante furono occupate dalla Prussia. A partire dal 1713, questo territorio fu ufficialmente assegnato alla Prussia come Alta Gheldria prussiana.
