Burkau si trova nel centro del distretto di Bautzen in una zona boschiva dell'Alta Lusazia. Il paese stesso si trova nella valle delle giovani acque del monastero, che sgorgano all'estremità occidentale del paese. Nelle vicinanze si trova anche la sorgente della Schwarze Elster nel paesaggio collinare della Lusazia nord-occidentale.
Il comune si trova a circa 6 km a nord di Bischofswerda e 16 km a ovest della città principale Bautzen. Si trova lungo l'autostrada federale 4. Gli svincoli di Burkau e Uhyst am Taucher si trovano nel territorio comunale.
La linea ferroviaria Bischofswerda–Kamenz è stata demolita, ma l'edificio della stazione a Burkau è rimasto intatto.
