Hochemmerich con 17.943 abitanti è uno dei vecchi nuclei abitativi della città di Rheinhausen, costituita nel 1934, che dal 1 gennaio 1975 è diventata il distretto comunale di Rheinhausen a Duisburg.
Col passare del tempo, il significato del nome Hochemmerich è cambiato. Come parrocchia, Hochemmerich è esistito circa dal 900, come municipio.
