Mainz-Kostheim era in precedenza un distretto della città di Magonza, fino a quando l'amministrazione pubblica da parte della città di Wiesbaden fu decisa il 10 agosto 1945. Il motivo di ciò era stato il facile controllo delle zone di occupazione alleata in Germania, dove il Reno formava il confine tra il settore americano e il settore francese. Mainz-Kostheim si affaccia sulla città di Magonza sulla sponda opposta del fiume Reno.
