Il territorio comunale è costituito dai distretti di Mittelberg e Petersthal. Con un'altezza di 1035 m s.l.m., Mittelberg è la frazione più alta del comune e una delle più alte della Germania.
Mittelberg viene menzionato per la prima volta in documenti intorno all'anno 800 come luogo della decima Wertach. Il territorio di Oy-Mittelberg apparteneva fino alla legge principale della Deputazione imperiale e alla secolarizzazione del 1803 al Pio Sodalizio di Augusta, da allora il luogo appartiene alla Baviera. Nel 1822, Mittelberg, eccetto la chiesa e il convento, fu vittima di un grande incendio.
