Salzgitter è una città extracircondariale nel sud-est della Bassa Sassonia, in Germania. Fa parte di una grossa conurbazione, insieme alle vicine città di Hannover, Braunschweig, Gottinga, Wolfsburg.
La storia di Salzgitter inizia nel XIV secolo nei pressi del villaggio Verpstedt . Il nome Salzgitter, menzionato per la prima volta nel 1347, deriva dalle parole tedesche Salz e Gitter, un villaggio vicino. Nei secoli seguenti, Salzgitter viene a far parte del principato vescovile di Hildesheim; della Prussia e del regno di Hannover.
