Hessisch Lichtenau si trova a circa 20 km a sud-est di Kassel, tra il Kaufunger Wald, alto 643,4 m s.l.m. a nord, il Hohen Meißner a est, il massiccio dello Stölzinger con l'Eisberg a sud-est e il Günsteröder Höhe con l'Himmelsberg a sud-ovest. La valle circondata da queste catene montuose è chiamata bacino di Hessisch-Lichtenau, che, come il centro di Hessisch Lichtenau, è attraversato dal fiume Losse e fa parte del Geo-Naturpark Frau-Holle-Land.
