Il vecchio nucleo del villaggio di Donsbrüggen si trova ai margini della Düffel intorno alla chiesa di San Lambertus. Verso Kleve e Materborn, a sud della strada federale 9, iniziano i rilievi della foresta imperiale di Kleve.

Le origini di Donsbrüggen risalgono all'alto medioevo franco; a 100 m a sud-ovest della chiesa sono state trovate tombe del VI secolo. Faceva parte degli Hattuarien nel territorio francofono di Austrasia. Nel 721/22 il conte franco Ebroin, figlio di Oda, donò alla chiesa di Rindern, presieduta all'epoca dal missionario anglosassone e vescovo Willibrord, possedimenti a Donsbrüggen, in particolare terreni forestali a "Dangaes-broch", che si estendevano fino a Mehr e Rindern; in seguito l'abbazia di Echternach fondata da Willibrord e l'abbazia carolingia di San Quintino qui erano feudi.
