Il Geislede è alimentato da due rami sorgivi: il Gieselbach, che ha origine presso Heuthen a circa 420 m di altitudine, e l'Ebra che proviene da Kreuzebra. Dopo la loro unione, scorre in direzione ovest verso Geisleden e poi in direzione nord-ovest verso Heilbad Heiligenstadt. Il corso del Geislede entra nel territorio urbano di Heilbad Heiligenstadt da sud-est e sfocia nella Leine presso la Sperberwiese.
Il Geislede attraversa il centro storico di Heiligenstadt da est a ovest e azionava fino a sei mulini, dei quali sono ancora conservati il Herrenmühle e il Klausmühle. Nel territorio urbano il corso d'acqua è stato fortemente canalizzato e parte è stata anche coperta da edifici come il collegio dei gesuiti.
