Il castello di Vöhlin si trova in una posizione dominante sopra la città di Illertissen, nella provincia di Neu-Ulm. Il castello moderno è l'edificio successivo al castello medievale di Tissen ed è oggi sede di due musei. Inoltre, funge da centro congressi per le università.
Il complesso del castello, variegato, si trova su un piccolo sperone di terreno che si estende a nord-ovest dal crinale montuoso che limita la valle, che si sviluppa in direzione nord-sud. A parte a sud-est, lo sperone di terreno scende ripidamente per circa 30 metri su tutti i lati, rendendo il castello ben visibile dalla valle di Illertal. L'unica strada percorribile per il castello proviene da est attraverso l'Allee del castello, che curva verso nord-ovest poco prima di raggiungere il fossato del castello. Inoltre, ci sono due sentieri pedonali con scale a ovest verso Bräuhausstraße e a est verso Vöhlinstraße.
